Week 2
Part 1.
The top 3 items I am good at is taking notes, reviewing easy questions on exams first, and setting a schedule. I think one area I could improve on is asking the right questions.
Part 2. Log
Companies have experts that focus on project management. A board of directors will decide on a project to be completed while a project manager essentially acts as CEO over that project. The work breakdown structure is a fundamental tool of project management. It is common to break down projects into its own products/deliverables. To create a work breakdown structure, you create a hierarchical decomposition of all the deliverables. Level 0 is the project. Level 1 is the Keyline (organizing principles). Level 2 is the Major Deliverable. Level 3 is sub-deliverables (helps meet end deliverables). Level 4 and further decompose sub-deliverables. Finally, get feedback before presenting final work breakdown structure. Each deliverable needs a description. Make sure deliverables don't appear twice and each level can be specified. Use work packages to develop deliverables and then decomposed to activities, sequences, and estimates. Project managers use a Gnatt Chart which plots times on a horizontal axis and tasks on the vertical axis. An activity is represented by a bar and the length of the bar represents the duration of the task. And the positioning represents the scheduling of a task.
Part 4 Capstones
A Bird's Song: A videogame about a bird that went extinct. The presentation was well-made and was like watching a trailer for an upcoming professional videogame.
National AI-Campus: A project that increased the accuracy of an existing algorithm for identifying tumors in brain MRI scans. The presentation includes research and graphics of the project. I think the presentation could improve a little bit if the speaker slowed downed a bit to allow the viewer to process information.
Town-Hub: A website that allows users to make RSVPs. I think the project was made well as it is a practical project that people may find users. I think the presentation was pretty okay although the speaker seemed a bit monotone which may make it harder for viewers to pay attention to the presentation.
Part 5 Weekly summary
On Wednesday, I went through the writing labs and completed the quizzes. I learned that when writing, I should define the audience and purpose which will help with word choice of my writing. There are three varying types of audiences: Experts, Managers, and Laypersons. When writing, I should write in a way that is clear: formal language, 3rd, person, avoiding cliches, etc.
I then went over the lecture material where I went over 3 different sources about software and project management. I learned that technology is becoming increasingly cheaper, with startups becoming more prominent. In the article, Trend in Computing, I learned that software engineering is the implementation of fundamental engineering principles in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software products. In software development, there are multiple methodologies that make the process of creating software products more streamlined. Today, these include Agile, CD, and DevOps.
I completed my first draft for the Industry Analysis Essay on Sunday and posted my peer review for my teammate on Monday.
Hey Cody!
ReplyDeleteAsking the right questions is tough for me as well, I tend to not ask many questions because of this. I now try to ask questions in the relevant discussion boards like the group discord, the cohort discord, and the canvas "Ask the Instructors" forum when I need help.
I also have a tendency to write cliches in essays. I found an article that can help with that: https://www.utep.edu/uwc/writing%20help%20online/cliches.html
