Week 4

Part 1 Educational Goals.

My main educational goal is to achieve my bachelor's degree in computer science in 2 years. Another educational goal of mine is to do well in my upper division classes so I can be prepared for a career in software development. I would also like to strengthen my collaboration skills through the use of group projects.

Part 2 Career Goals.

One of my main career goals is to become a professional software developer after graduation. I hope to leverage my current internship as an Android developer to find a new internship next summer, so I can explore different fields in software development.

Part 3 Guess ETS percentile.

If I had to guess, I think I would be in the 70th percentile. I feel pretty comfortable with programming, but I think I would struggle more with the theory-based questions and would have to review my notes from discrete/data structures beforehand.

 Part 4 Learning Journal.

Writing material:

For my Ethics essay, I will need to consider the prior knowledge of my audience, and I will need to persuade my reader that a certain course of action on a controversial issue is more suitable over the opposing view, based on an ethical framework while avoiding logical fallacies.

Key points of writing an argumentative essay:

  • Persuade readers who disagree
  • Make both sides of the argument clear
  • Address two sides of an issue while being unbiased
  • Present each side of an argument to an audience
Inference: concluding something to be true based on something else being true.

Assumption: taking something for granted or presupposing something without question.

Loaded words: words that are enhanced to invoke an emotional response. Can cloud our judgement and sway an opinion.

Logical fallacy: a defect in logic that weakens an argument

  1. Hey Cody, I really like how clear and focused your goals are. Finishing your CS degree in two years is no joke, but with your mindset, I know you’ve got it in you. I also think it’s great that you’re not just trying to get through it—you’re focused on doing well in your upper division classes and building those collaboration skills too, which are just as important as the technical stuff.

On the career side, it’s awesome that you’ve already got an internship under your belt. That kind of experience early on really makes a difference. I think it’s smart that you’re looking to try different areas next summer—getting exposure to a variety of roles will help you figure out what you actually enjoy most. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re setting yourself up for a solid path in tech.
